Preventing Varicose Veins

Posted on

Varicose veins are generally thin and purple veins that are very close to the surface of your skin. This allows the veins to be visible from the outside and they aren't viewed as something that's attractive for a person to have. They can be short and consist of just a few,  or they can be long and look similar to a spider web with a lot of them all tangled up together. Sometimes varicose veins can appear no matter what you do to avoid them. However, there are things that you can do to decrease your chances of getting them. You can learn all about some of the ways you can avoid having them show up by reading the information provided in this helpful article.

Watch your weight

One of the things that you want to do to decrease your chances of dealing with varicose veins is to make sure you retain a healthy weight. You can find BMI calculators online that will let you know if your current weight falls within the guidelines of a healthy weight, or if it's time for you to start watching your diet. If you already know that you are overweight, then you should talk with your doctor who can help you with tips on how to eat in a way that will help you to lose the extra weight.

Exercise daily

You should also stay active when you want to help prevent those varicose veins from showing up. Daily exercise can improve your overall health, but it also helps with circulation which can ward off those veins.

Wear supportive shoes

Try on shoes before you buy a new pair and make sure they fit you correctly. Not only should the shoes feel good on your feet, but they should also correctly support your arches and not lift your heels too far above your toes. There are some shoes you should do your best to stay away from as much as possible and these include high heels and shoes that are too tight.

Don't wear tight hosiery or socks

If you put on a pair of stockings and you can tell they are a little too tight, then it's best for you to remove them, even at the expense of not wearing any. Also, you don't want to wear socks that fit too tight.

Don't sit in the same position for long periods of time

You should move your legs around when you are sitting for a while. Also, it's a good idea to get up and walk around for even just a minute or two when you are sitting for a while.
